Enbar

“The Scorched Fringe”

Overview

Enbar is the smallest of the major continents on Tellus (excluding Empyrea), measuring approximately 1000 miles north to south and 1800 miles west to east. Its roughly rectangular shape marks it as one of the more compact fragments of the shattered disc.

The southern coast is its most dramatic feature , a long, jagged shelf of land sheared away during The Breaking, leaving a steep drop-off into the sea. The black sand beaches and fractured cliffs of this coastline stretch for hundreds of miles, with Thule lying approximately 800 miles due south across a storm-tossed sea.

At the heart of the continent lies a massive inland lake more than 100 miles wide, fed by hot springs and seasonal rains. This central basin was once the sole domain of the gnoll tribes, who roamed the fertile plains for thousands of years , until the Unrooted Elves arrived.

History & Culture

Five centuries ago, elven ships arrived from the east. These elves, known as the Unrooted, used arcane might to push inland, driving back the gnolls from the coast. Through both force and diplomacy, they subjugated many of the gnoll clans, arming them with new weapons and introducing them to strange magic and foreign ways.

This created a schism among the gnolls , those who bent the knee became elite warriors and builders, allies of the elven city-states. But others refused, clinging to ancient traditions, retreating into the hinterlands and mountain ridges, and waiting.

For centuries, the Unrooted built gleaming citadels and magical wonders, with their greatest city constructed on the southern shores of the central lake. They forged a fleet of black-hulled warships, and 22 years ago, they launched a full-scale invasion of Galtia. The campaign ended in disaster: their armada was shattered by the human kingdoms and the arcane backlash of a nearby Shardspire. Only a few elves returned.

Now, the balance is shifting. The gnoll clans have begun to raid again, smelling weakness in their old masters. Enbar is a land on the brink , a land of magic, scars, and embers.

Climate

Enbar straddles the temperate and subtropical bands, but its proximity to geothermal activity skews its climate toward the unusual.

  • Warm ocean currents, volcanic terrain, and frequent ashfall give Enbar a uniquely humid, mineral-rich atmosphere.
  • Storms are common, but snow is rare , replaced by sulfur rains and volcanic haze in the north.
  • Coastal waters are unnaturally warm, supporting glowing coral reefs and vibrant sea life.

Terrain & Geography

The Emberfang Spine

A serrated volcanic ridge dominating the northern edge of Enbar, formed of black basalt and riddled with glowing magma vents.

  • Not a single range, but a fractured chain stitched together by lava tubes and obsidian arches.
  • Mount Vehrak: A massive stratovolcano and spiritual center to some gnoll clans.
  • The Hearthgates: Twin craters that belch embers into the sky like a forge's breath.

“Enbar does not rest. It smolders.”

The Smokevale

A northwestern basin perpetually filled with ash, fog, and sulfurous steam, creating a dreamlike and deadly landscape.

  • Populated by glass-barked trees, glowing moss, and pools of toxic beauty.
  • Magical readings here are inconsistent , suggesting ancient machinery or deep leyline corruption.

The Crucible Flats

A south-eastern volcanic plain composed of broad, flat slabs of dark rock , interspersed with geometric fissures and geothermal pools.

  • Despite the heat, this is the most inhabitable region on the continent.
  • Ruins, standing stones, and ancient conduit-like structures lie partially buried beneath the cracked earth.
  • The elves built much of their infrastructure here, tapping into a power they barely understood.

The Embercoast

Enbar’s eastern coastline is wild and volcanic, made of collapsed lava tunnels and boiling tidal coves.

  • The Obsidian Arches, near the northeast cliffs, offer haunting views of Empyrea.
  • Coral reefs here glow faintly, and strange sounds drift through the water , possibly echoes from the World Engine or the shardspires.

The Shardspire

At the southwestern tip, a massive crystal monolith of unknown origin rises from the black rock , a Shardspire.

  • It resonates with faint harmonic pulses, and those who touch it report visions, lost memories, or strange whispers.
  • Believed by some to be a control rod or anchoring structure from the disc’s creation.
  • Others claim it was responsible for the magical backlash that doomed the elven fleet.

Peoples of Enbar

  • Gnolls:
    • Indigenous inhabitants.
    • Divided between clan-traditionalists, who continue their nomadic way of life, and loyalist gnolls, integrated into elven society.
    • Still the dominant population across the interior.
  • Unrooted Elves:
    • Arcane colonizers from the east.
    • Their power has waned since the failed invasion of Galtia.
    • Maintain control over a few city-states and port holds.
  • Others:
    • Troll explorers have been known to visit from Thule.
    • Rumors speak of undersea peoples and ancient Urlosh ruins beneath the Crucible Flats.
