Kingsbridge Districts
Tellus | Galtia | Kingsbridge | Districts
The city of Kingsbridge was founded in 3177 as the first permanent settlement of the colonists from Cathan. It began as a settlement named Southshore, and a secondary settlement later grew up on the eastern bank named Highside. Some of the original stone wall is still present in the wall around the Southshore district, once used to protect the early settlers, now it serves as a dividing line between the city and the less desirable inhabitants of the non-human district that occupies the original land. Eventually a secondary wall was bult up, which now contains The Old City, Highmarket, Scholar's Quarter, and Riverbend.
Breadgate - This district acts as the buffer between the expansive farmland north of the city and the outer walls, and contains much of the city's food processing industry and stables
Dockside - Stretching along the riverfront and harbor, Dockside houses warehouses, shipyards, fishmongers, and the lodgings of sailors.
Eastank - A mirror to Westbank but wealthier, Eastbank contains theaters, alehouses, and respectable merchant homes. The Big Fish Gang has its roots here, giving it a sharper edge.
Guild Row - The center of the city’s guild system, lined with halls representing everything from shoemakers to masons to the Freelancer’s Guild. It is one of the most politically charged parts of Kingsbridge.
Highmarket -The bustling heart of commerce, filled with stalls, shops, guildhalls, and the Great Bazaar. Merchants from across Galtia gather here, and prices shift daily depending on caravans and ships.
Hillside - Originally the location of villas belonging to upper class merchants and nobles of Lyonesse, the area fell out of favor with the secession of Highside to Kingsbridge in 3025. The Landis elite were well entrenched in the western districts, and the area fell to those with much lesser means. There's a familiar phrase "Everyone who isn't anyone lives on the hill".
King's River Bridge - This massive stone bridge stretches 1400 feet across the King's River and is the only bridge to do so. The bridge is 150' wide, and is lined with shops of all kinds, with a broad passage between constantly filled with a stream of people, animals, carts and wagons. Built predominantly from moonstones dredged from the river, it is a testament to modern engineering. The size and population of the bridge make it a district of its own.
Oakfield - A quieter, tree-lined neighborhood slightly removed from the city bustle. Oakfield has sprawling manors favored by landed nobles who want the prestige of city life without sacrificing space.
Riverbend - Located along the western bank but separated from the docks, this area lacks the crime of Westbank, has access to the market district, and has become home to many of the city's finest craftsmen.
Scholar's Quarter - Built around the Arcane University, this district is full of bookshops, scriptoriums, alchemical suppliers, and the homes of sages and mages. Apprentices swarm the streets.
Silvercourt Isles - The most fashionable quarter for the wealthy. Lined with marble townhouses, perfumed gardens, and gilded fountains, Silvercourt is where the richest guildmasters and foreign envoys compete in ostentatious displays of wealth.
Southshore - The original location of the first settlement is now cordoned off from the rest of the city and is home to most of the city's non-human population. It may be Southshore on paper, the alliterative name of Sideshow is what many people call it under their breath.
Stonehearth - A dwarven-founded district of sturdy stonework homes, artisan forges, and breweries. Known for its craftsmanship and its taverns, many dwarves and half-dwarves still reside here.
Sunspire - Named after its tall, golden-roofed watchtower, this ward is a blend of noble villas and influential merchant palaces. It has the feel of an enclosed enclave, where politics and power dinners are an everyday occurrence.
Temple District - A concentration of shrines and temples, ranging from mighty marble halls dedicated to the Pentacle to tiny street shrines of wandering spirits. Pilgrims fill the streets during holy days.
The Downs - The fastest growing district in the city, it contains businesses and infrastructure supporting the racing scene and the trainyards.
The Old City - Home to the oldest buildings in the city, the courts, and financial district, it remains a major hub of the city.
The Warrens - A warren-like sprawl of alleys, cheap lodgings, and crumbling tenements. The poorest citizens dwell here, and it is a haven for cutpurses, smugglers, and outcasts.
Westbank - Controlled heavily by the Iron Crow Syndicate, Westbank is a mix of tenements, gambling dens, and black markets. Locals say “the law stops at the wall.”
