Thule ✧ The Whispering Expanse
"The ice speaks to those who listen. But not everything it says should be heard." —Troll proverb carved into a frost-split stone near the Bleak Coast
Overview
- Continent Size: ~2,500 miles across
- Climate: Primarily tundra and cold temperate, with some regions in the subpolar band
- Orientation: Rounded outer edge facing the Realstream, fractured inner arc facing Enbar and Empyrea
- Topography: Thule resembles a tilted shield, cracked and uplifted along one axis, sunken along the other, an exposed remnant of the broken plate
- Population: Sparse, ancient, resilient, dominated by jotun (frost giants) and trolls, with only minor human presence
Climate & Environmental Context
Thule is the coldest of the major continents, a place where breath freezes on the wind and echoes travel for miles across snow-wrapped valleys.
- Subpolar zone: Western and Southern Veilward Expanse
- Temperate zone: Northern lowlands and coasts
- Weather: Wind-sculpted storms, auroras, glacial winds, and frost mirages are common
Major Geographic Regions
The Veilward Expanse (Southern Hinterlands)
A haunting tundra filled with black-needled forests, frost-stunted hills, and hidden valleys where winter never sleeps.
- Flora & Fauna:
- Veil Trees – Ancient evergreens whose sap glows faintly blue
- Rimebursts – Sudden, explosive blooms of magical frost
- Fauna: Mammoths, wooly buffalo, dire elk, and sabrefangs (sabretooth tigers) roam in nomadic herds
- Inhabitants:
- Jotun (Frost Giants): Towering reclusive herders, hunters, and sky-watchers who trace constellations in the auroras
The Sunken March (Central Basin)
A vast, partially drowned depression filled with strange ruins and whispering reeds.
- Features:
- Broken ziggurats, basalt towers, and ancient black stone circles, all tilted or submerged
- Considered cursed by many trolls, sacred by others, a place of forgotten gods or failed awakenings
The Hollow Range (Northeastern Edge)
A low, sprawling range of naturally perforated rock, filled with strange harmonics and hollowed chambers.
- Soundscape:
- Winds and arcane currents create a low droning sound that never stops
- Notable Site:
- The Harmonic Crypts – Resonating caverns said to amplify thoughts, prayers… and madness
- Echo Hold – A natural stone formation where sound carries for miles on certain winds. Troll war drums are often tested here.
The Bleak Coast (Outer Eastern Arc)
A jagged, ice-lashed coastline of black beaches, shifting ice flows, and magnetic anomalies.
- Hazards:
- "False Ice", frozen plates that drift when unwatched
- Dense fogs, auroral interference, and massive tide shifts
- Troll Longships are known to navigate here, but few outsiders make landfall
The Icebreak Spine (Far Southern Ridge)
An uplifted arc of broken land where Thule tears away from the disc into the Realstream.
- Landscape:
- Craggy, splintered cliffs plunging into ice-choked sea
- Giant fissures and avalanches occur without warning
- Said to be the domain of spirits of wind and stone, or the remains of divine sentinels
Special Site: The Mirror Vault
Buried beneath a glacial ridge in the eastern midlands, this obsidian structure defies all attempts to breach or understand it.
- Properties:
- Perfectly smooth surface, immune to all tools
- Emits a faint hum at dusk
- Warps light, reflections stretch, shadows flicker, and colors shift toward impossible hues
- Believed by some to be a relic of the Progenitor, or a divine lens watching the sky
Peoples of Thule
Trolls
Seafaring, clan-based societies that echo Norse traditions in both craft and culture.
- Location: Hollow Range, Bleak Coast, and inland valleys
- Traits: Rune-binding, bone-and-ice smithing, sea mastery
- Religion: Many revere Khyris, the Ice Queen, and her palace of crystalline frost hidden somewhere in the north
- Maintain naval contact with Ferresti, and may once have traded with gnoll tribes of Enbar
Jotun (Frost Giants)
Solitary and ancient, the frost giants of Thule move with glacial patience.
- Location: Veilward Expanse
- Culture: Star-tracking, beast-calling, and elemental rites
- Some revere Khyris as a cosmic force, others reject all gods
Other Inhabitants
- Sabrefangs – Sabretooth tigers with pale fur and reflective eyes, known to track prey for days
- Mammoths & Wooly Buffalo – Domesticated by trolls or hunted in sacred rituals
- Icebound Fey – Rare and enigmatic spirits or tricksters
- Humans – Rare explorers or castaways from Cathan or Hyperia; none have formed lasting colonies
Religious and Mythic Presence
Khyris, the Ice Queen
A demi-goddess of stillness, mirrors, and frozen memory.
- Said to reside in an unreachable palace of crystal somewhere deep in the Veilward.
- Trolls honor her with songs and silent vigils
- Her influence is strongest at dusk, when the auroras sharpen into crown-shaped arcs
